Calling It Quits

Gum ball puzzle
November 2013
I love to tackle a good jigsaw puzzle and have worked on some difficult ones over the years. I thought I was up to the challenge this puzzle offered, but I was wrong: I called it quits when only the gum balls remained.

This puzzle was the second (the first is shown here) in recent memory to cause me to cry, "uncle!" I am sure it will not be the last.

Have you ever put a puzzle back in the box before it was completed?

  1. I have, but not always because it was too difficult. A lot of times I get started on a puzzle and then find I don't have time to finish it before I have to clear off the table for visiting guests. I need a better place than the dining room table to work on puzzles.

Im ashamed to say I've never finished a big puzzle..ever. They all go back into the box...

  3. I'm so stubborn that I stick with a puzzle until I discover there is a piece missing. The last piece! No kidding, I would have to fight those gumballs through to the finish--red here, green there, purple over here....

  4. Um, not that I can remember. But then I haven't tried the gum ball puzzle!

  5. Only because I needed the table space! I'm with Wool Winder.....I need a better place to start them! I've always loved puzzles (of any kind), and delight in trying to do them without looking at the box! LOL

  6. That is a swine of a puzzle. Doubt it would have seen daylight around here!

  7. Gumball puzzle sounds pretty brutal. I say "next"! I have given up on a puzzle here and there. I have a Gorey that I have been wanting to do, but I don't really have the space to do it. I am thinking I need some poster board ... but it might eat into my knitting time, ha!

  8. Yes but only because I needed the space. We have a card table upstairs that is used for puzzles now, the last one went in the box because I had to dust the table. That looks like a great puzzle when finished! :):)

  9. We use to do Christmas Puzzles. The last one took 8 years to complete!! I thought for sure we would not finish it and we would be missing a piece. BUT we did finish it with All the pieces. We haven't tackled another one.... Mainly because we aren't home long enough in the winter!

  10. I have not cried Uncle over a puzzle. I have thrown a temper tantrum and left the finishing to the hubby. He has this horrible ability to match a piece in his hand to the box and pop it in the puzzle first time - so maddening! We only do one puzzle a year - start after Thanksgiving Dinner is cleaned up and generally finished that weekend. It always has Santa in it. g

  11. I've never really finished a puzzle either, my sister has always loved them, I think I never could sit down in one place long enough :)

  12. I have thrown in the towel on a few puzzles, because they took too long, and I needed the table space. I remember when I was growing up, I had a huge family. We could do puzzles extremely fast. Now, that my family is smaller, they sit there a while. With the baby, we don't do them at all.

  13. That looks like a really tough one! We used to get one out before Christmas to help the time pass but haven't done that for a while. No kids here anymore. I don't think I'd have finished yours either though!

  14. Ooooh! Just the thing for a rainy beach forecast ahead. Luckily, I know the house already has a great selection of challenging puzzles, and a wonderful dining room table.

And no, I don't recall ever putting an unfinished puzzle away. I usually finish really awful books and bad movies too.
